BOTOX® Cosmetic offers fantastic, non-surgical results for fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes, forehead, and eyebrows. But to enjoy the best of these results, patients need to follow their nurse injector’s specific aftercare instructions. This blog lists the top do’s and don’ts of BOTOX® Cosmetic immediate aftercare, along with tips for long-term maintenance.

Everything You Should and Shouldn’t Do After Your BOTOX® Cosmetic Treatment

There are two phases of recovery after BOTOX® Cosmetic injections: the immediate period when the product is settling, and the final healing stage, when you want to protect your skin and maintain the results.

Right when you get home from your treatment, here’s what you need to know:

  1. Don’t touch your face/neck

Whether your treatment is for crow’s feet, forehead lines, frown lines, or platysmal bands of the neck, refrain from touching the treatment area for at least 24 hours. Leaving your skin alone reduces the risk of the product traveling to other areas of the face, ensuring the results are as intended.

  1. Don’t work out

Avoid strenuous activities for at least 24 hours, as increased blood flow and heart rate can cause the BOTOX® Cosmetic to migrate from the treatment area, potentially affecting results.

  1. Don’t use saunas, hot tubs, or other heat sources

Sun exposure, heating pads, and saunas should be avoided in the first 24 hours after your treatment, as heat can cause bruising or product spread, both of which can affect results.

  1. Don’t drink alcohol or use blood thinners

Medications like aspirin or ibuprofen, as well as alcohol, can thin the blood. This increases the chance of bruising and similar risks.

  1. Do stay upright

Immediately after your BOTOX® Cosmetic injections, try to remain seated or standing upright for at least four hours. This is another tip for keeping your injections where they’re supposed to be, not traveling down your face.

  1. Do make gentle facial movements

Without touching or poking the treatment areas, you can make soft facial movements, such as smiling, frowning, or lifting your eyebrows, to help massage the muscles and allow the product to settle in the treatment areas.

  1. Do use a cold compress

Using a cold compress like an ice pack or a chilled towel can help reduce redness and swelling immediately after your treatment. However, make sure you use light pressure while applying it, and use a maximum of 10 minutes of contact.

  1. Do stay hydrated

Drink plenty of water to keep your skin supple and hydrated after your BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment, and maintain these healthy habits to help your results last longer.

  1. Do a gentle skin care routine

Avoid other facial treatments for at least a few days after your BOTOX® Cosmetic injections to keep the product in the treatment areas, and be gentle with your at-home treatments. Don’t push on your skin or rub it when applying your moisturizer or washing your face at night.

  1. Do protect your skin as your final results appear

BOTOX® Cosmetic results can take some time to appear, so be patient. Most people can expect to see full results from their BOTOX® Cosmetic injections about three to seven days after treatment, so continue caring for your skin as noted above as you wait.

Tips for Long-Term BOTOX® Cosmetic Aftercare

After the initial BOTOX® Cosmetic healing period, you can still take steps to maintain your results.

Firstly, it’s important to use SPF and avoid sun damage. Excessive sun exposure is not only very damaging to your skin but can also break down your BOTOX® Cosmetic and other injectables much more quickly. To preserve your results and protect your skin from sun damage, use a daily sunscreen and reapply as needed.

It’s also vital that you attend follow-up appointments. After your first or second BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment, your nurse injector will have a good idea of how your body responds to the treatment and thereby what your maintenance schedule should look like. Most patients touch up their BOTOX® Cosmetic every two to three months. Maintaining a good routine not only reduces the appearance of your fine lines and wrinkles but can also prevent new wrinkles from forming, as the muscles are not constricted under the skin’s surface.
