Microneedling and BOTOX® Cosmetic are both excellent treatments to add to your aesthetic maintenance routine, but it’s important to schedule your appointments separately and in the proper sequence. This blog discusses the benefits of both microneedling and BOTOX® Cosmetic, when they should be performed after one another, and which other treatments can be performed at the same time.

Can I Schedule Both Botox® Cosmetic Injections and Microneedling on the Same Day?

BOTOX® Cosmetic injections and microneedling are two powerhouse non-surgical treatments for patients looking for minimally invasive yet effective skin enhancement and rejuvenation. The two treatments share overlapping benefits, such as wrinkle reduction, but ultimately occupy distinct spaces in aesthetic care, which is why patients often want to combine them. But can you have microneedling done after your BOTOX® Cosmetic injections?

The short answer is yes, you can have microneedling performed after your BOTOX® Cosmetic injections, but not on the same day. Below, we’ll discuss the correct timing for these procedures so you can make the most of each and see ideal results.

When Should I Schedule Microneedling After Botox® Cosmetic?

Non-surgical medspa treatments like microneedling, BOTOX® Cosmetic, and even filler injections can be performed together, but timing has to be right to ensure each treatment and product is in the right conditions to be most effective. Here’s a brief overview of how both microneedling and BOTOX® Cosmetic work:

  • Microneedling treatment involves using tiny, surgical-grade needles to create micro-injuries on the skin’s surface to stimulate collagen and elastin production, smooth textural irregularities, even skin tone, heal imperfections, and boost glow and dewiness. After microneedling, the skin may be sensitive, red, and mildly swollen. Tiny scabs can also appear and must slough off on their own to avoid scarring. After about a week, patients can see improved skin texture, skin tone, and wrinkle reduction, with continued improvement as collagen continues to build.
  • BOTOX® Cosmetic is a neurotoxin that impedes muscle contractions below the skin’s surface, smoothing dynamic wrinkles throughout the brow and forehead. Repeated injections can even prevent new wrinkles from forming, as the product atrophies strong muscle groups to reduce friction on the skin. Patients are required to avoid touching their face or applying pressure to the treatment areas, and to avoid lying down for a few hours after treatment to prevent the product from traveling outside the treatment area.

So while many patients have both microneedling and BOTOX® Cosmetic as important parts of their aesthetic routine, these appointments are never scheduled together and must be spaced a few weeks apart so each treatment can do its job best.

If you have BOTOX® Cosmetic injections first, you’ll need to wait at least 2 weeks before undergoing microneedling to allow the Botox to settle in the treatment area. The repetitive motion of applying microneedles to the skin can affect the results of your BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment if the microneedles are applied too closely together.

Alternatively, if you have microneedling done first, it’s probably best to give yourself at least a week to let the skin fully settle after the treatment and allow any scabs to fall off and heal on their own.

What Procedures Can I Combine With Botox® Cosmetic?

Each patient is different, and the best way to determine which procedures can be safely combined in a single Med Spa visit and which are best for you is to schedule a consultation with an experienced esthetician or nurse injector. During your consultation, you can discuss your treatment goals, and your esthetician will recommend the appropriate number and frequency for each treatment type and schedule your appointments at an ideal pace.

Only a few procedures are commonly performed at the same time as BOTOX® Cosmetic due to risk of product migration. Treatments that come into contact with the treatment area (forehead and brows), such as laser resurfacing, peels, and microneedling, are typically scheduled a few weeks after BOTOX® Cosmetic. However, you might be able to schedule mild facial treatments right before BOTOX® Cosmetic injections with little issue.

Dermal fillers are also a possibility, depending on your aesthetic provider’s advice, whether you have had them done before or not, and the treatment area. For example, you might be able to have your lip filler touched up at the same time as your frown line BOTOX® Cosmetic injections, as the two areas are far enough apart that they typically won’t interact. However, if it’s your first time with either treatment, you’ll need to make sure you have a normal reaction before combining them.
