Neck Lift

As the natural aging process takes hold, most of us will lose skin elasticity and start to develop unwanted facial lines, wrinkles, and creases. Early signs of aging can be frustrating and difficult to get rid of, especially loose skin and excess fat on the neck. Often referred to as a “turkey wattle,” excess skin and tissue hanging from the neck can be unflattering and annoying. Even with normal exercise and diet, it seems that the neck area is impossible to target with at-home treatment methods. Someone who would like to achieve tighter facial skin and decrease facial lines may benefit from neck lift surgery.

Often performed in conjunction with a facelift, brow lift, or eyelid lift, a neck lift is an ideal procedure for achieving a more youthful appearance. During neck lift surgery, excess skin and fat are removed to improve the severity of sagging neck features and to diminish deep facial creases.

  • Provides a rested, more youthful appearance
  • Creates firmer, smoother facial skin
  • Eliminates fatty deposits on the neck
  • Removes loose skin and muscle bands on the neck

Neck lift surgery is performed in our outpatient surgery center under a general anesthetic. The operation typically takes two hours, or longer if combined with other procedures, and patients should expect about two hours of recovery before returning home. Traditionally, the incision will begin in the hairline at the level of the sideburn and continue down and around the ear, ending in the posterior hair. Dr. Bonaldi tries to make the incision as inconspicuous as possible by concealing it along the natural hairline or the contours of the ears. Patients who have minimal sagging in the neck and only need minor correction may benefit more from a limited incision neck lift, which involves incisions only around the ears.

Through the incision, fat can be resculpted and redistributed in the jowls and neck. The neck tissues are repositioned, and the platysma muscle is tightened. Any excess skin is trimmed, and the remaining skin is redraped smoothly over the newly defined contours. The incisions are closed using sutures.

A bandage may be placed around the face and neck to minimize swelling and bruising. Dr. Bonaldi will provide you with specific instructions on how to care for the surgical drains and sites. Patients should keep the head elevated and straight to aid in proper healing. Every patient’s level of recovery is different. Most patients can return to work and normal activities within one to three weeks.

It can take some time before results become fully apparent and residual swelling fully subsides. Most patients will notice full results within three months. They see their newly improved muscle tone and neck contours with firmer, smoother skin. With proper care and a healthy lifestyle, patients can enjoy their more youthful, rejuvenated neckline for many years.
