Reasons for Breast Implant Removal

Breast implant removal is a commonly performed procedure. Most breast revision patients decide they would like to remove and replace their implants, but there are some who wish to remove their implants completely to restore their original breast size. Here are some of the top reasons for breast implant removal and/or implant exchange.

Dissatisfaction With Breast Size or Appearance

One of the most common reasons for breast revision surgery is cosmetic dissatisfaction. After their initial surgery, patients often wish they had chosen larger implants or implants that show more fullness at the upper pole of the breasts. A thorough consultation in which you and your surgeon discuss your goals, physical anatomy, and any risks associated with arriving at the results you desire, can prevent this type of breast augmentation regret.

In some cases, the use of implants that are too large for a person’s frame or breast anatomy can pose more risk to the patient, and a secondary breast augmentation may be planned ahead of time to safely achieve the desired results. Once the breasts have healed from the first augmentation, the tissues will have stretched enough to accommodate the larger implants the patient desires.

Capsular Contracture

Capsular contracture is one of the most common complications of breast augmentation. It occurs when the implant “pocket” formed during surgery develops excessive scar tissue that can harden and squeeze the implant. The result is pain, discomfort, swelling, and noticeable distortion. As a result, patients must either have their implants removed or removed and replaced. This can be done with one procedure or two, depending on the patient’s desires and the extent of the complication.

Infection

Infection is another much less common complication of breast augmentation that occurs when the body responds adversely to the breast implants. Since infection can be very painful and can lead to other complications, it is important to remove the breast implants as soon as possible. If desired, breast revision is usually performed once the breasts have fully healed from the infection and from the surgery to remove the implants.

Detection of Breast Cancer

Breast implants can, in some cases, interfere with standard mammography. Other imaging techniques, such as an MRI or digital mammography, can improve detection. It is not always necessary to remove the implant if cancer is detected.
