Is Laser Hair Reduction Really Worth It?

2 Minute Read:

Over a lifetime, managing body hair can be time-consuming and expensive. Waxing, threading, plucking, even shaving—it is all pretty tedious for men and women who seek to eliminate their body hair regularly.

Those looking for a smoother, more comfortable alternative might want to consider laser hair reduction. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, this non-invasive technique is becoming increasingly popular and even more affordable as the treatment develops.

What Is Laser Hair Reduction?

Laser hair reduction passes a highly concentrated light through a handheld device over the skin.

Pulses of intense light penetrate and destroy hair follicles, inhibiting (or slowing) future hair growth. It can take several sessions to significantly reduce the amount of unwanted hair on the legs, arms, or elsewhere as hair grows in different stages—and all stages must be treated.

Results are not necessarily permanent as some regrowth may occur. This laser treatment is much more accurately described as laser hair reduction, not laser hair removal.

Periodic maintenance sessions may be required; however, any new growth will be much lighter, finer, and slower-growing.

Will Laser Hair Reduction Work for My Hair Color?

The darker the pigmentation in the hair to be removed, the better when it comes to laser hair reduction.

For this reason, grey, blonde, or lighter hair may not respond to the treatment. The age of the patient is of no consideration; the darkness of hair pigmentation is the most important prerequisite.

That said, it helps if patients are generally in good health, are non-smokers, and don’t have pre-existing skin conditions that could be irritated by the treatment.

Is Laser Hair Reduction Painful?

It depends on the individual, but laser hair reduction treatments are much less painful than waxing techniques, where the hair is literally torn out by the roots.

Most patients report minor tingling or a burning sensation at the point of contact. Mild pain can be avoided with a pre-procedure topical gel or light medication.

Do I Need a Recovery Period After Laser Hair Reduction?

Downtime for healing is not required following laser hair reduction treatments, and you do not need to restrict activities.

If you have sensitive skin, you may experience some redness, puffiness, and tenderness, but this will fade quickly. Cold compresses can be applied to help with any swelling. Vigilance applying sunscreen following treatments is recommended.
