What Is the Dermal Filler Procedure Like?
Dermal Filler Consultation
The first step is to have a consultation with one of our experienced nurse injectors. They will examine your face and listen to your goals for the procedure. Depending on what you are interested in, they will recommend a specific filler type and amount tailored to your needs. They will also check your medical history and ensure you don’t have any allergies to the fillers or their active ingredients, discuss risks and benefits, and potential results.
How to Prepare for Dermal Filler Injections
Before your dermal filler appointment, we recommend avoiding blood-thinning medications and alcohol, as they increase the risk of bruising. Pause using retinoids or harsh exfoliants for a few days before, as these can cause irritation. Come to your appointment with clean, makeup-free skin, and stay hydrated.
What Are the Dermal Filler Procedure Steps?
- Your provider will clean and prep your skin, removing any residual makeup or lotions.
- A topical anesthetic is put on the treatment area and left to take effect, usually for about 30 minutes or so.
- Once your skin is numbed, your provider will make precise injections around or in the treatment areas. Short, quick pinpricks are typically all that is felt.
- Once they reach the desired result, you will be given a cold compress to soothe discomfort and swelling.
The entire process usually takes less than an hour, including the time it takes for the numbing cream to work.
Dermal Filler Recovery & Aftercare
Recovery after dermal filler injections is minimal, but there are a few rules. Your provider will give you specific instructions based on the type of filler you have and the treatment area, which may include the following:
- Avoid touching or applying pressure to the treatment area; this can cause the filler to migrate or appear uneven as it settles.
- Avoid alcohol and blood-thinning medication for at least 48 hours.
- Avoid heat exposure for the first few days.
- Stay hydrated.
- Cold compresses (with minimal pressure) can help alleviate swelling and discomfort.
- Sleeping with your head elevated can also help reduce initial swelling.
Some minor redness, bruising, and swelling are completely normal and will dissipate within a few days.
