Breast Reduction

The breasts are a symbol of femininity, and the way the breasts look can affect a woman’s self-image and confidence. Overly large breasts can cause a woman to feel uncomfortable and have chronic neck and back pain. Heavy, pendulous breasts can make it difficult to wear certain clothing and to participate in physical activities. To correct these and many other issues, women can undergo breast reduction surgery. Breast reduction can reduce the size of the breasts and elevate the nipples. During this procedure, excess breast fat, glandular tissue, and skin are removed to create breasts that are more pleasing and flattering to the rest of the woman’s physique. Overall, breast reduction patients can feel comfortable and live in a body that has more youthful breast contours.

Benefits of Breast Reduction

A Youthful Breast Aesthetic

Breasts that are too voluminous can sag significantly, contributing to a displeasing appearance. After breast reduction surgery, the breasts will look more lifted and youthful. Patients who opt for this procedure can also enjoy a proportionate and attractive silhouette.

Enhanced Overall Comfort

Heavy, cumbersome breasts can strain a woman’s back, neck, and shoulders. Many women also struggle with skin irritation and mobility issues due to having large breasts. By undergoing breast reduction, patients can alleviate the discomfort associated with their bustline.

Improved Nipple-Areolar Appearance

The weight of voluminous breasts often results in enlarged, stretched, or downward-facing nipples. During breast reduction surgery, the nipple-areolar complex can be repositioned and resized to create a natural and more visually pleasing aesthetic.

Breast Reduction Process

Anesthesia

The procedure is performed under a general anesthetic or intravenous sedation. The type of anesthesia used will depend on the desired extent of correction, the patient’s overall health, and personal preference. Patients will need to have someone take them to and from their surgical appointment, as they will be unable to drive afterward because of the effects of sedation.

Incisions

Depending on the patient’s condition and cosmetic goals, one of the following incision patterns will be used to excise the excess tissue:

  • Keyhole, or racquet-shaped
  • Inverted-T, or anchor shaped
  • Circular around the areola

Procedure

Through the incision, excess skin and glandular tissue are removed, and the nipples are placed in a more attractive position. The incisions will be brought together to reduce and reshape the breasts. The procedure can take anywhere from one to three hours. After surgery, patients can expect to be in recovery for two hours before being cleared to go home.

Addressing Your Concerns

Recovery

After surgery, dressings and bandages will be applied to the incisions. A sports bra may be worn to help minimize swelling and to support the breasts. Typically, patients can return to work after one week of downtime, although swelling and bruising may last up to three weeks. Patients should refrain from physical activity until they receive clearance from Dr. Bonaldi.

Scars

Breast reduction surgery is likely to result in scarring. However, Dr. Bonaldi places all breast reduction incisions in discreet locations whenever possible so that they can be covered by undergarments. With proper aftercare and time, scars tend to blend into the surrounding skin and become less noticeable.

Cost

The cost of your breast reduction procedure will be determined based on the technique used, the severity of your condition, anesthesia fees, and facility fees. An accurate price estimate will be calculated during your consultation.

Pain

Pain can be expected after breast reduction surgery, but prescription medication can alleviate the discomfort. Patients may take over-the-counter pain medicine, but they must avoid blood-thinning medications.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How long will my breast reduction results last?

This procedure delivers lasting results, but the breasts are still susceptible to change. Experiencing pregnancy, weight gain, and aging can affect the size and shape of the breasts, so adopting a healthy lifestyle is essential for maintaining your results.

  • Do I have to quit smoking before my breast reduction surgery?

Smoking interferes with healing and can trigger severe postoperative complications. All breast reduction patients are asked to quit smoking at least six weeks before their procedure to experience a smooth recovery and optimal results.

  • What results can I expect after my breast reduction procedure?

Breast reduction will result in smaller, more youthful breasts. You will notice that your breasts feel lighter, which will eliminate neck and back pain as well as increase your mobility. The resulting smaller and more shapely breasts will be immediately noticeable, although full results will be visible in three to six months.

  • What foods should I consume during my breast reduction recovery?

High-protein, low-sodium foods are recommended during recovery from breast reduction surgery. Fresh fruits and vegetables are also helpful for maintaining hydration and avoiding postoperative constipation.
